Deer Tactics

January 05, 2023

Whitetail deer are known for their keen senses and ability to adapt to their surroundings, and one of the ways they do this is by bedding in terrain features that provide them with advantages such as oxbows. An oxbow is a bend in a river or stream that forms a loop, and it is a common habitat for deer due to the cover and protection it provides.

One of the main advantages of bedding in an oxbow for a mature whitetail buck is the cover it provides. The bend in the river creates a natural barrier, which can help to segregate the deer from predators. Additionally, the tall grass and other vegetation that typically grows in an oxbow provides the deer with additional cover and protection.

By bedding in an oxbow when the wind is blowing into the oxbow in their direction, a mature whitetail buck can use the natural wind tunnel created by the bend in the river to detect any potential threats. This allows the deer to stay alert and be prepared to take action if necessary. Additionally, the river itself can provide the deer with an escape route if they need to flee from a predator. The water can make it more difficult for predators to pursue the deer, giving the deer a better chance of escaping to safety.

Overall, an oxbow is a great terrain feature for mature whitetail bucks to bed. It provides the deer with cover and protection, and allows them to use the wind direction to their advantage to detect predators. By bedding in an oxbow, a mature whitetail buck can increase its chances of survival and thrive in its natural habitat.
